  General Notes:

Brother uterine of James II
The attribution of his children between his wives is not certain. The Scots Peerage (Atholl) does not even try to say which child was by which wife but Burkes Extinct Peerages 1883 does give a lead. However, with The Scots Peerage naming more daughters than Burkes Extinct Peerages 1883, with some names being duplicated, some doubt remains on this matter.
He took an active part in suppressing the rebellion in 1463 of John, Earl of Ross, the last "Lord_of_the_Isles," John Macdonald was tried for treason by his peers-Argyll, Atholl, Huntly, and Crawford-in 1476 he forfeited his earldom of Ross and his lands in Inverness, Knapdalc, Kintyre, and Nairn, and it is said that at that time Sir John's nephew, King James III., used the words which became his motto :"Furth_fortune_ and_fill_the_fetters"

(Margaret (Beatrix) "Fair Maid Of Galloway" Douglas [695] was born in 1430 and died before 19 April 1475.)
