  General Notes:

1 - The first of the Stewart kings, Robert was born of Walter, 6th High Steward of Scotland and Marjorie Bruce, daughter of Robert the Bruce. He acted a prominent part in the affairs of government during the minority of David II. He held the office of regent of Scotland during the captivity in England of his uncle David, 1346-1357, and succeeded to the throne on his death, in 1371 when Robert was 55 years old. He was engaged for several years in war with England, in which he was aided by the French; and was in command of the second division of the Scottish Army at Halidon Hill, and was one of the few who escaped the carnage of that disastrous day.
He lived chiefly in retirement during his latter years, the Earl of Fife being named regent in 1389; and died at Dundonald Castle, in 1390 of infirmity
He was a very passive person with no love of war, so he let his son John, Earl of Carrick (later known as Robert III) rule instead.
There is some confusion over which daughter is which and who are their mothers which still needs some clarification.
Robert was a domestic partner of Marion Cardny "Concubine"
"Succeeded his uncle King David II Bruce on his death in 1371, he was the first of the Stewart Kings, In 1390 he was succeeded by his middle-aged son Robert III"
2 - Dundonald Castle, Nr. Irvine. North Ayrshire
A 14th Century Tower House built by King Robert II who loved country pursuits and Dundonald became his favourite residence. The Castle, or Tower house to give it a more correct name was built on the site of an earlier castle which had been built by Alexander Fourth Steward of Scotland around 1260; he was the grandfather of Robert II. During work on the Castle by Historic Scotland excavations revealed evidence of earlier structures going back to the Dark Ages. The archaeological dig' exposed foundations of previous buildings on the site which serviced the Castle; e.g. blacksmith, stables and a brewhouse. As you ascend one of the approach paths there is a well which was uncovered during the excavations.
The prominent hill at Dundonald was first occupied well before 2000 BC. Then a hill fort was built between 500 and 200 BC and the site was occupied on and off until about 1000 AD. The hill has not one but three medieval castles built on it, covering a period from the early 12th century to 1647. Three noble families are linked with the place, but it is the castles associations with the Stewart's that gives the castle its special importance. In 1482, the castle and estates were passed to the Cathcart's, and in 1526, it came into ownership of the Wallace's. By the end of the 17th century it was in ruins.

Noted events in his life were:

• Acceded to title, 22 February 1371.

• Crowned, 26 March 1371, Scone Abbey, Perthshire, Scotland.
